Principal's Message

On behalf of the St Michael’s Primary School Mittagong community, Fr Sean Cullen and our Parish of Corpus Christi Mittagong/Bowral, I extend a very warm welcome to you and your family.

My name is Katrina West, and as the principal of St Michael’s my role here is both a privilege and a source of inspiration. Our school community is a truly welcoming community, blessed with dedicated and committed staff, parents and students.  We are a collaborative community working in partnership to achieve the best outcomes for the children entrusted to our care.

St Michael’s is one of two Catholic Primary Schools in the Corpus Christi Mittagong / Bowral Parish.  Our school has a long history, being founded by the Sisters of St Joseph in 1891 and has been established for over 130 years.  We are a caring community, built on the charism of the Josephite Sisters and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, with staff, students and families supporting each other to create the best learning and pastoral outcomes for all. Our school is part of the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong and we are blessed to have such a vibrant and rich network of schools where learning is shared and experiences celebrated.

St Michael's is a one stream co-educational school of approximately 180 students, catering for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.  A true benefit of this smaller community size is that it enables all staff and students to know each other well, both as a learner and as a person with unique qualities. We provide students with a wide range of opportunities to engage in all aspects of school life.

Our St Michael’s Primary School staff are focused on helping the students grow to be the best they can be. We offer a range of extracurricular activities and great facilities, like our play-based designed playgrounds.  The school is focused on the students being self driven and motivated learners and incorporates digital technologies in all classes to support their engagement in today’s contemporary learning environments.

The wellbeing of our students, staff and families is at the very heart of our school community. In partnership with the family, we lead students to develop positive, respectful relationships with each other. At St Michael's, we have an embedded wellbeing concept of “Be The Best Me I Can Be”, which inspires our students to show mutual respect, understanding, tolerance and kindness towards each other.

We believe parents and guardians are the first educators of their children. The staff respectfully bring their professional knowledge and skills to complement this partnership in education. Our community welcomes and encourages parent engagement and involvement and we are actively supported by our Parents and Friends (P&F) Association.

At St Michael's we aim to live out our vision statement, by creating an environment in which all children who leave our school have a positive sense of community; that they have an appreciation of, and respect for themselves as valuable people; that they show kindness and respect for other people and the world in which they live; that they have been given the opportunity to attain their academic potential, and are aware that learning is a life-long experience.

On behalf of the St Michael’s Primary School Mittagong community, I warmly welcome you to our parish school.  I encourage you to take a digital tour through our school website. This website is an important communication tool for our current families as well as families considering an education at St Michael's. I invite those parents who have further questions about St Michael's or families that would like a tour of our wonderful school, to contact me personally via our school office. With every blessing to you and your family,

KATRINA WEST
Principal
